Fast-casual dining is among the trends that make Marco’s the fastest-growing pizza franchise in the U.S.
As we looked at 2015 restaurant and small business trends lists that are popping up in magazines and news outlets, we were struck by how many of them can double as an endorsement of the Marco’s Pizza ® franchise business model. Here are five ways Marco’s is either keeping up with the trends or helping to create them.
1. Pizza is popular — with a capital P
It’s hard to imagine a food that Americans love more than pizza. We spend $40 billion a year on pizza, and that number keeps growing. Forbes.com reports that in less than two decades, per capita pizza consumption has gone up 41%.
How popular is pizza? 91% of Americans eat a slice — or two or three or even more — at least once a month. On any given day, about 13% of Americans enjoy pizza, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Over the course of a year, we buy 3 billion of the delicious pies.
2. Fast-casual is hot and getting hotter
The popularity of fast-casual dining is one of the biggest restaurant success stories of the past few years. Forbes.com reports that traffic in the fast-casual segment surpassed that of every other type of restaurant for the fifth consecutive year. Fast casual sales grew by 11 percent, according to Technomic’s 2014 Top 500 Chain Restaurants report, and unit count grew 8 percent. Those numbers far surpass the otherwise lackluster growth of the overall restaurant industry. Traffic counts at quick-service restaurants, like burger outlets, were flat.
3. We want healthier choices
Research by the National Restaurant Association shows that 71% of adults are trying to eat healthier at restaurants than they did just two years ago. Marco’s Pizza ® franchise is sensitive to the trend. As a best-in-class pizza brand, we use only fresh, premium ingredients, and we have a wide array of menu choices, including five kinds of healthy salads and fresh-baked subs. If you want lean meat and veggies on your sub, we can do that!
Plus, the U.S. Department of Agriculture praises pizza as a significant source of calcium, protein and fiber, and says pizza sauce is a good source of lycopene, a naturally occurring chemical that makes tomatoes red and may have healthy antioxidant properties.
4. Authentic food is in
Among the top 25 pizza franchises in the United States, only Marco’s Pizza ® franchise was founded by a native Italian. Pasquale “Pat” Giammarco immigrated to America with his family at age 9 and started his first pizza restaurant in 1978 in Toledo, Ohio.
Americans are increasingly demanding authentic food, and every Marco’s pizza is prepared with dough made fresh in-store every day and sauce made from a hybrid tomato specially developed for us. Our cheese is never frozen, and we always slice our veggies in the kitchen every day. We use premium, thick-cut meats from top quality suppliers.
5. Demand for small business opportunities
Small businesses are a continuing source of dynamism for the American economy, and they are now growing at the fastest pace since the Great Recession. More and more Americans are declaring their confidence in the future by saying goodbye to corporate life and pursuing their own vision by going into business for themselves. Another exciting group of entrepreneurs who’re becoming small business owners are military veterans looking for opportunities in civilian life.
